MiniMate Enclosure for More Disk Space and Ports

It's an amazing time to be a Mac Mini owner. This simple, tiny, under-powered toy of a computer is inspiring people all over the world to create an entirely new industry: Cool stuff for Mac Minis.

MicroNet has introduced the perfect add-on for the Mini: The MiniMate. This Mac Mini-shaped external enclosure houses a Firewire hard drive, four USB 2.0 ports, and three FireWire ports.

It costs a little or a lot, depending on how big the hard drive is. The top of the line model with a 400 GB drive will set you back $500, while the entry-level MiniMate comes with an 80 GB 7200 RPM drive, and sells for $149. Is this a good deal? Well, let's try to get similar features using existing products.

The D-Link DFB-H7 6-Port Hub (4 USB 2.0, 2 FireWire) is $51.99, and the LaCie 80GB External Firewire HD designed by FA Porsche sells on Amazon for $109.24. that's $161.23 combined, and you still come up 1 FireWire port short! And they don't look nearly as cool as the MiniMate will sitting right there under your Mac Mini.

I really need to find an excuse to buy a Mini...
